Khemah - Cream
Khemah (meaning 'tent') is just one of Caitley's patterns that is inspired by her upbringing around the Khaymaiya (Arabic خيّامية Khayyāmiyah) or Egyptian Tentmakers Appliqué. Khaymaiya is primarily created in Cairo and part of a unique aspect of Egypt's living heritage.
Such artisans have been know for centuries for their decorative tents which have spread across the Arab territories. Geometric and arabesque patterns deriving from Islamic ornamentation and imagery from Pharaonic art are hand stitched by men, into quilt like panels. These durable tapestries serve both to shield inhabitants from the hot, dry and dusty desert while adding ornamentation to its interior. They are an important aspect of everyday Egyptian life creating portable venues for weddings, feasts, festivals and funerals. Each design and panel an incredible work of art. (More about Khaymaiya on the blog.)
